
Zaanse Schans is a small town on the banks of the Zaan River, near Amsterdam, Netherlands. This village is full with organized green houses, topical museums such as the clock museums, the first Albert Heijin store and real working windmills. In the period of seventeenth and eighteenth century there were thousands of windmills such as sawmills, dye mills, oil mills, which were found helpful for improvement of Dutch economy. Not all the windmills started in Zaanse Schans, many of them were moved from this place as they came in danger due to urban development across North Holland. Zaanse Schans windmills are one on of the most famous windmills in the world.
All Windmills at Zaanse Schans are working, which performs various functions like saw mill, grinding pigments and oil mill. On the ground floor of the oil mill one can see big grindstone crushing peanuts, which are then roasted and pushed for extraction of oil. On the first floor one can see a big wooden device that converts the wind energy down to the grindstone, which also gives the view of the sails of windmill. The sails of this windmill take 16 seconds for completion of one full rotation.
Zaanse Schans is the perfect destination for a day trip outside Amsterdam as one can see working windmills, which are very fascinating and awesome to watch. Around the village one can also see how the clogs are made, the antique clocks or one can even purchase sweets from the oldest Albert Heijin shop.
