Kinderdijk Netherlands

Kinderdijk is a village in Netherlands, which belongs to the municipal corporation of Nieuw-Lekkerland, in the province South Holland, about 15 km east of Rotterdam. Kinderdijk is located in a polder at the union of the Lek and Noord rivers. In this region, 19 windmills were built in the year 1740 to deplete the polder. These windmills in Kinderdijk are one of the best known and world’s most famous windmills.

These mills drain the excess water from the Alblasserwaard polders, which are located below sea level. The blades of these windmills are very powerful, which serve to transmit the force of the wind on to large paddle wheels that scoop up the water.

These windmills are preserved and maintained by Wereld Erfgoed Kinderdijk foundation. In the year 1997 windmills of Kinderdijk were put on the World Heritage List of UNESCO.
