Schiedam is located at west of Rotterdam and is easily reached by public transport from Rotterdam. Area of Schiedam is surrounded by 20th century commercial and residential buildings, which looks like pocket size Amsterdam. At the western edge of Schiedam, there are world’s five tallest windmills, which were built in between the years 1770 and 1803. These windmills were built for the purpose of grinding grain for Schiedam’s main industry.

In the period of 1880s, there were 20 windmills in this area, which were used to grind grain for 400 distilleries and that, made the famous jenever of Schiedam, where more gin was produced than in any other city in the world. Two of the five remaining windmills still grind grain for jenever industry.

The sails of other three windmills still move but only for demonstration and these three of five windmills can be visited to witness the  interiors; one houses a shop, one a museum and third a restaurant. This windmill is very beautiful and awesome to watch.
