The Waubra wind farm is situated in Waubra, approximately 35 km north-west of Ballarat city in the state of Victoria, Australia. The Waubra wind farm project is the biggest renewable power project in the southern hemisphere. In February 2009, the Waubra wind farm started generating green power and in July 2009 it became fully operational.
The Waubra wind farm encompasses 128 wind turbines with an operations centre and associated substations. Every wind turbine has a capability of 1.5 MW (megawatts), providing an entire established capability of 192 MW. The power generated by the Waubra wind farm every year produces electrical energy for 143,000 households which is more than enough to power Ballarat city of Victoria state. Statistics suggest that approximately 635,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions is compensated by the Waubra wind farm every year.
This wind farm project will help Victoria to fulfill its future energy needs significantly. The obligation of the Victorian State Government’s to a Victorian Renewable Energy Target (VRET) has resulted in providing financial help in the construction of Waubra wind farm. The wind turbines in Waubra wind farm are selected on the basis of particular local terrain and wind conditions. There is a community formed by Acciona Energy termed Community Reference Group (CRG) in order to foster communication between members of wind farm project team and the Waubra community.
