Hau Nui Wind Farm

Hau Nui wind farm is located approximately 13 kilometers south-east of Martinborough town in the South Wairarapa district of New Zealand. In New Zealand, Hau Nui wind farm was the first wind farm that was built. This place is perfect for a wind farm as wind currents are accelerated and funneled over the Rimutaka Range and through the nearby Cook Strait. Hau Nui wind farm is a 15-turbine wind farm with a combined capacity of 8.65 megawatts. The seven original Enercon E-40 wind turbines were installed in 1996 which were third generation wind-energy technology and the additional eight turbines were the latest versions of this model and were installed in December 2004. All the 15 turbines of Hau Nui wind farm have rise to a height of 44 meters and have rotor diameter of 40 metres.

Hau Nui wind farm supplies enough electricity into the neighboring region

to meet the annual needs of over 4,200 homes in the Martinborough area.Depending on the output and demand, this wind farm also supplies electricity to Greytown. This wind farm has a well-designed viewing area with seating arrangement from where one can view the impressive turbines and machines. Hau Nui wind farm was built in 1996 and became New Zealand’s first commercial wind farm generating adequate electricity to power more than 4,000 homes.
